The Netherlands and Belgium hold one of the densest small and mid-cap sponsor communities in Europe, and one of the most frequently misread by firms operating from London in English only.
The market
Dutch and Belgian private equity is unusually fragmented at the lower end. Alongside the familiar mid-market names there is a long tail of funds running single-digit teams and investing in businesses with ten to fifty million euros of enterprise value. These firms carry no internal talent function and rarely hold a standing relationship with a search firm, which makes them both harder to reach and more open when reached.
The dominant deal types are succession in family-owned businesses and buy-and-build in fragmented services and industrials. Both produce finance leadership requirements, and the succession cases in particular tend to be first institutional money, where no investor-grade finance function exists yet.
The language question
This is where most cross-border searches quietly fail.
A Dutch business will interview in Dutch, whatever the job specification says, and a candidate who cannot hold a board conversation in Dutch will not get the role regardless of their track record. In Belgium the question is sharper still: Flanders operates in Dutch, Brussels and Wallonia in French, and a number of firms run internally in English while their portfolio companies do not.
Even the register matters. Dutch business correspondence in the Netherlands uses the informal second person; in Flanders the formal one remains standard. It is a small thing that tells a reader immediately whether the person writing actually works in the market or has looked it up.
